Chicken Curry

Chicken Curry

Growing up in Poland I never ate any Indian dishes and I did not know much about Indian cuisine. The only dish I ever heard of was chicken curry. As I mentioned in one of my posts, for the first few years of my marriage, my husband was the one cooking. My husband, even though he is of Indian decent, does not like Indian dishes too much. I mean… he likes them but he is not crazy about them. He doesn’t really like food that is very spicy. And Indian food is flaming hot.

Once I discovered Indian flavors I fell in love with them. I learned how to cook Indian dishes by watching many you tube videos.  I really love spicy food.  Polish food has no spices at all so many people are surprised when I tell them that I like my food spicy. Whenever we go to visit my husband’s family members for the first time, they are always concerned that I will not like the food 🙂  I always tell them that I am a big fan of Indian food and I like it even more than my husband does 🙂

The only Indian dish that my husband knows how to cook is chicken curry. Before I started cooking, I would ask him to make it for me every single week. That’s how much I like it. And I never get bored of it.

This is the recipe that my husband thought me. I love my chicken curry with the potatoes. Once all the spices get soaked into the potatoes they taste awesome.

 Recipe:

  •  4-5 skinless chicken legs
  • 2-3 small potatoes
  • 1 cup of natural yogurt
  • 2 tbsp. of curry powder
  • 2 tbsp. ginger garlic taste ( if you don’t have ginger garlic paste you can use 1 tbsp. freshly grated garlic and 1 tbsp. freshly grated ginger)
  • 1 tsp. of chili powder (if you don’t like your food spicy you can omit the chili, if you like it very spicy add some more)
  • 2 tsp. of salt (or to taste)
  • 2 tbsp. of oil of your choice (or ghee which is Indian clarified butter)
  • ½ onion , chopped
  • ½ cup of water
  • coriander leaves for garnish

To make it:

I set up the stove to medium high, add the oil to the pot and let it heat up. Once the oil is hot I add the onion and fry until golden brown (about 5 minutes).

Then, I add the spices (curry powder, chili and salt) and fry for few seconds.

Next I add the yogurt and mix everything together.

Once all the spices and yogurt are combined I add the chicken and the potatoes. I mix everything together to make sure all the chicken is covered. Finally, I add half a cup of water or enough to cover the chicken.

I bring the heat up and let it come to a boil. Once the water comes to a boil I lower the heat to medium low and cook the chicken for approximately 35- 40 minutes or until done.

Once the chicken is done I sprinkle it with fresh, chopped coriander leaves. I like to eat chicken curry with white rice or a naan (Indian bread). I love to take the fresh, warm naan and dip it into the gravy. It’s delicious.
