Hummus with Pita Chips

Hummus is one of my husband’s and mine favorite snacks. We used to buy canned hummus from the local store every week. Until I discovered how easy and quick it is to make it at home. Homemade hummus is much more TASTY and HEALTHY 馃檪  Chickpeas are a great source of PROTEIN and FIBER. In addition they contain high amounts of vitamin B6 and folate. And HUMMUS is 100% VEGETARIAN 馃檪 

Hummus is a popular Middle Eastern dish and in Arabic hummus means chickpeas. It could also be spelled as hummus, hummous, hommos, humos,hommus and hoummos.

Fresh hummus is creamy, smooth and delicious. It is a quick and healthy snack! You can also customize it by adding your favorite flavors like roasted garlic, cilantro or roasted red peppers. Today I’m posting the basic hummus recipe with homemade pita chips

Ingredients:

  • 1 can of chickpeas (15.5 oz)
  • 1 tbsp. tahini paste (sesame paste- if you don’t have it you could add peanut butter but I recommend buying tahini paste. It stores very well in the fridge)
  • 1/3 cup of extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 2 tbsp. of lemon juice
  • pinch of salt and pepper or to taste

To make it:

Drain the chickpeas saving 1/3 of a cup of the water from the can

Add the chickpeas, garlic, tahini paste, lemon juice and salt and pepper to the food processor

Cover the lid and pulse few times

Turn the food processor on and start slowly adding the water saved from the chickpeas

Next slowly add the olive oil

The hummus is ready. Transfer it  to a bowl and drizzle with some olive oil. Sprinkle paprika over the top and garnish with some black olives

ENJOY!!!

* NOTE : The secret to creamy humus is adding the wet ingredients slowly. Keep adding the water saved from the chickpeas in a slow and steady stream. Once incorporated do the same with olive oil. Keep scraping the sides and the bottom of the food processor  from time to time.

For PITA CHIPS:

  • 2 pita breads (you can use whole wheat to make it healthier)
  • 1/4 tsp. of cumin powder
  • 1/4 tsp. of paprika
  • 1/4 tsp. of granulated garlic
  • 1/2 tsp. dried oregano
  • 1/8 tsp. chili powder
  • 2 tbsp. olive oil

Preheat  the oven to 450 F. Cut the pita bread into eights. Cover well with the olive oil and all the spices. Bake for 3-4 minutes or until crispy.

Hummus is a great snack or appetizer. You can serve It with carrot, cucumber slices or as an addition to any meal. I had my leftover hummus with chicken kebabs. I will post the recipe for the kebabs soon. 馃檪
